Texan Gothic -
Limited Edition Art Print.
No. 1 in the Texas Originals Series.
15"x19", hand-numbered and limited to 254 copies.
Taken in front of the Alamo one summer day in 1939. We call it Texan Gothic because it reminded us of Grant Wood's famous painting, American Gothic.
Look at this man...arrow straight, chin held high. Pride of place written in flesh and bone. His wife is symbolic of the women who saved the Alamo from the wrecking ball at the turn of the last century. Her look is serious and reverent, but the subtle turn of her body shows she's eager to move. It's as if she's saying, "There is much to be done...there will be other times for pictures!"
They stand at the site of the low wall where Davy Crockett commanded the defenses during the battle. Between the couple you see a stanchion set in the plaza which intersects a shadow formed by a low step. This accident of position and light created a fleeting cross, an instantaneous memorial to those men who died at that very spot so that Texas could be free. If our couple had stood 6 inches to the left or right, this cross would not be there for us to see.
Finally, there's the young girl. She seems not unsure what is so significant to her grandfather...A reminder that the next generation must be taught. It doesn't happen automatically. She may not get it yet, but her grandparents have taken her on the pilgrimage to the Shrine of Texas Liberty. Thus begins the transmission of heritage...
The edition is small. Truly limited. There are only 254 hand-numbered copies (that's the number of counties in Texas.)
It is a high quality giclee print measuring 15 by 19 inches. The paper is acid free, cold press watercolor with an elegant, ever-so-slightly textured finish. This surface allows the inks to "bite," reproducing the shading and tonality of the original photograph richly, beautifully and exactly. The inks are guaranteed colorfast for 80 years, which means you won't have to dole out the extra cash for UV glass. You can hang your print in direct sun if you wish and it will be just as bright when it is passed on to the next generation as it is today.
This is a print that is sure to garner comments when your friends see it. Get yours before they're gone.
